Category: Let's talk
I think that we are less likely to be tempted to buy things that we don't need because we already have a list when we go in with our shopper's assistant. what do you guys think?
What kind of shopping are you talking about? Personally i wouldn't buy more food than i need but when i see a new clock, watch, mobile phone, and simmilar kind of things like electronicks i want to get them even if i don't need them lol.
So i don't know i think it deppends on the people. I wouldn't generalise it.
I don't really think we do it more than the sighted. However, I think they're more tempted to buy since they can see what they're buying. For example, someone might buy a new car for looks rather than out of necessity. .
I agree with that. Or at least, sighted people are more likely to look around because of the same reason. There are also times I will buy something I don't need either because I've never tried it (if it is food), or because it feels or sounds interesting to me. But of course, that's if I end up encountering it by accident or if I know the store I'm in might carry it. Otherwise, I would usually not just go to a store or go around to different stores just to buy something I don't need or just to look around.
i am a hsop aholic! i'm sure i buy many things i don't need. heheheh just ask my husband. hehehe
Anything electronic, you can forget about that one. There are a lot of blind people who buy things based only on the fact that everyone has it. I've done it before, and got burned for it when My MiniGear Binaural Microphones, as well as everyone else's, died at the exact same time.
Blind people can "look around" I do it all the time. If it's food no, but other stuff, phones, new computers when the one I have works just fine, music, headphones, better speakers you name it. I'm tempted. This isn't a blind VS. sited thing it's a have the money, will buy thing.
Hell look in my kitchen, I got a bunch of crap I don't need but wanted. My tech stuff the same thing. I have a friend when we go to a store we hit the housewares and look around.
not at all! i am a shopaholic...
You could make a case for blindies being less tempted to impulse buy, purely on the fact that we miss all the visual advertising that's around, absolutely everywhere. The signs and posters and bill-boards, and the 20% off today only signs. But as to the rest, I think some people just are and some just aren't. If I hear, sale on boots, well, moth to flame. And we won't get started on the discount music racks.
Well, I think by the variety of responses, we learned that one can't generalize about shopping behaviors among the blind. In general, I'm a seek and estroy shopper. I know what I want, go get it, and get out. Now if I'm in a music store, that's different. My wife and I had a neat arrangement when there was a craft store right next to a Guitar Center near me. Thank God for the cellphone. We'd just go our separate ways, and keep in touch. Come to think of it, after I bought that two grand synthesizer, that sort of ended.

<lol Lou>
I take care of the problem by not ever going shopping, except grocery shopping where I go crazy.
Many of my friends, and my kids love to shop, so I let them do it and they may come back saying "hey I saw something you might like", and I obsess over it for a few days before I decide not to get it. <lol>
But, I hate to shop.

LOL Lou.
I agree with the idea Erin had, that we don't impulse-buy so much... In grocery stores, I might try something I haven't had before, so might spend an extra couple bucks, but other than that, am pretty low-key when it comes to spending habits. Music is another matter altogether, though. LOL

yeah I really don't like shopping all that much either, but man, when it comes to computer stuff or music I'm all over that stuff. Also, I love love love getting new clothes, new, sexy trendy clothes! Lol, I know I know, that's so girly.
I have to admit, that with the Internet and accessible computers, I'm more interested in just browsing stuff than I ever used to be, because it's way easier now.
I agree with motifated's last post; now that I'm able to, I find myself browsing stores' websites so I have an idea of what I want or what's out there. It's such a pain to say to someone when you're shopping, "Okay, now tell me *everything* on the shelves." :)
As for impulse buying, it depends, for me, at least. If I'm in a music store, forget about it. Same with a few other stores, like Lush (think Bath and Body Works or The Body Shop, but chemical-free and much higher quality). I'm also particular about the food I buy. Clothes, eh, not so much.
hmm, I don't shop. And, when I do, I end up buying this stuff I don't use. Like for example, I bought a bunch of dvd's a year ago, and I didn't watch any of them, well I watched probably 2, lol.
I keep a budget when I go shopping. I take so much outo f the bank and buy what I need, not what I wont use. For instance I buy everything on my shopping list, if I want something I rarely get like doughnuts or a package of candy then I'll get it cause I feel I deserve it. If I go shopping for like clothes or something: I go bargin shopping and only buy non-fashion labels cause I know that what I buy is what I wear. Rarely do I ever buy something that I don't need or can find use of.
I'm an impulse buyer when it comes to electronics and Bath and Bodyworks, but I don't usually buy something I don't need.
